JHB Communications is my latest business venture and I couldn’t have gotten here without freelancing. I started learning about marketing when I was a senior in high school. I started my own crochet business, Beanies & Weenies, on Etsy and had to figure out how to get my products out there. Since then, I started offering all of the marketing services I used on my own business to other small businesses facing the same struggles I was. Fiverr was the place that I started and it helped me a grow my business to where it is now!
I never would have thought that freelancing could be a success, but I am living proof that it can work. I freelanced all throughout college and never had to get another job. I wouldn’t be here starting my own business if it weren’t possible to make a living off of freelancing! If you’ve ever considered doing your own freelance work but have have doubted that you could actually be successful, don’t be scared off by your doubts! Anything is possible! Here are 7 reasons why you should consider freelancing:
- You are your own boss. Freelancing means you don’t have to report to anyone. The clients you encounter will be reliant on you to determine deliveries and deadlines, not the other way around.
- You get extra pocket money. If you already have a steady job, freelancing will give you extra cushion in your wallet. If you are in between jobs or looking for a new way to make money, freelancing offers you a new way to pay bills. The best part is all of the profit you make goes straight to your pocket. Just remember, business will be slow at first until you get your name out there.
- Work from home. There’s nothing more comfortable than waking up, grabbing a cup of coffee, and going to work back in the comfort of your own bed. You’ll never understand the joy of working in your pj’s until you try it. Trust me. It IS satisfying.
- Work around your own schedule. No more clocking in and out. No more rushed lunches. When you freelance, you get to take your time doing what you have to do. As a college student, it is a huge relief to be able to work around my heinous schedule. I can make $10 writing a blog post in the hour I have between classes so that when I get home, I have plenty of time to crochet my fall line.
- Take vacations whenever you want. When you freelance, you don’t have to clear vacations with anyone. You can go whenever you feel like it. Work slow today? Take a daycation on a moment’s notice. Feeling stressed out? Take some time to unwind and relax.
- You learn so much in the process. On Fiverr, most of my sales comes from messages that my gigs weren’t even about. I list gigs for writing reviews, recording music samples, creating images, and working as a virtual assistant. In the process, I have learned how to make compliance calls, found new websites for image creating, learned new flute techniques, and researched so many topics, it would make your head spin for me to list them all. I feel like a much more rounded person since I have started Freelancing.
- You can do what you love. There is nothing better then being able to do what you love and get paid for it. I love to write and I am earning a steady income doing just that. It’s refreshing to work on something you know and something that doesn’t get old to you. Freelancing allows you to take your hobbies and passions and turn them into a decent living.
Freelancing was a major part of my income while I was in college. It allowed me freedom to do all the things normal college kids do while still helping me pay the bills without taking out a loan. I was able to exceed all the expectations I had about freelancing. I started by writing and creating images on Fiverr and now I am starting my own business.
I highly recommend freelancing to anyone who wants to the freedom it allows and Fiverr is a great place to start for anyone who has an interest in it. Even if marketing this type of work is not your strong suit, that’s OK. There are plenty of resources out there to help you. You can even hire fellow Fiverr members to get you started with gig images and item descriptions or come to use for guidance on how to get started!
Freelancing is a wonderful experience and can give you a confidence you didn’t know you had.
